To add a network folder to the search index, follow these steps:
- Open the Indexing Options dialog box by clicking on the Tools menu and selecting Indexing Options.
- In the Indexing Options dialog box, click on the File Types tab and select the Add button.
- In the Add Network Folder dialog box, type in the path to your network folder and click on OK.
- Click on OK in the Indexing Options dialog box to close it and return to Explorer.
- When you search for a file from Explorer, you will now get results that include files stored in your network folder as well as files stored on your computer’s hard drive. ..
The Windows client will not add a network location to the local search index. Instead, it will pass that search on to the server and the server will perform a search using its index. If you are trying to search a NAS device, it will perform the search in real-time, so the results will take some time to appear. If searching a Windows File server, you need to ensure that the search index on the server includes all desired locations.
Step 1 – Share Folder
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming C:\Users<user name>.minecraft The first two folders are the ones you’ll want to share on your NAS or on the host machine. The third folder is the one you’ll want to include in the index.
I went to the Sharing tab and clicked on the three lines in the top left corner that said “Share this folder with…”. I clicked on the three lines in the top right corner that said “Share this folder with…”, and then I clicked on the two lines in the bottom left corner that said “Create a new share.”
After clicking on the Sharing tab, I checked the Share this folder box and clicked on Permissions. I then gave Everyone Full Control. You obviously don’t have to give everyone full control, I’m just doing it here because it’s easier to setup. ..
Step 2 – Map Network Drive
Next, you need to map the folders on your NAS to the folders on your PC. To do this, open Explorer and then click on Network at the bottom. Find your NAS, file server or PC in the list and then double-click on it to see the shared folders.
If you want to access the files on the file server or network PC from a different computer, you can use Easy access and Map as drive. To do this, first click on the shared folder and then click on Easy access. Then, click on Map network drive. You’ll need to provide credentials to log into the file server or network PC.
If you want to connect to a computer or file server using different credentials, check the Connect using different credentials box and then type in the username and password for that computer or file server. Now when you go to the computer, the mapped drive should be listed. ..
Now right-click on the network drive and click on Properties. Make sure to check the Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties. ..
To add files to the Windows 10 search, open File Explorer and navigate to your mapped NAS folder. Once you’re there, right-click on any of the files and select “Add to Windows 10 Search.” This will add the file to the search index and you’ll start seeing results in your search results. Depending on how many files have been added, it could take some time before you see them. ..
The good news is that Microsoft has added support for indexing files in the cloud, so you can access your files even if they’re not stored on your local computer. You can also use the Indexing Options tool in Windows to see which files are being indexed and how much space they’re using. ..
Windows 10’s search feature is slow because it’s performing the search in real-time. This means that if you have a lot of files on your network share, your search will be slow. You can try my post on how to rebuild the search index if you are not getting the desired results when doing a search. If you have any problems with searching a network location in Windows 10, please post a comment here and I’ll try to help.
